Abstract

Generally, English has four important skills that are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. All of skills are important to be mastered in order to enable learners to communicate using English. Among all of the skills, speaking is considered as one of the most important skills to develop since it involves the learners not only with the language aspects, but also with many aspects like confidence, anxiety, shyness, nervous and others. The problem of this research is many barriers of speaking English for English foreign language learners at the fourth semester of English education study program in Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Muhammadiyah Kotabumi. The purpose of this research was to describe about internal and external barriers of speaking English for English foreign language learners at the fourth semester of English education study program in Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Muhammadiyah Kotabumi. The method of this research is qualitative research that focuses on case study. The subjects of this research were learners at the fourth semester class A of English Education Study Program, the researcher has picked eight learners as subjects of this research with use snowball sampling technique, they are five male and three females. The researcher used semi-structured interview for collecting the data. The result of this research has revealed two categories of barriers internal barriers and external barriers. Internal barriers are classified into six barriers which are caused by several aspects those are (1) motivation, (2) nothing to say, (3) shyness, (4) mother tongue, (5) age, and (6) identity and language ego. While, external barriers are classified into three barriers which caused by several aspects those are (1) school factors, (2) learners’ autonomy, and (3) environment factor.
