Abstract
In learning a language, words are the first thing to learn. Word formation which is part of morphology can be the topic for the researcher from English Department. One way of forming words is compounding, which is combining two elements from existing words to form a new word. Based on the part of speech, compounds are grouped into three: nominal compounds, verbal compounds, and adjective compounds. From this formation the meaning of the compound is created, which consists of two kind of semantic headedness, namely endocentric compounds which have meaning inside the head of the compound, and exocentric compounds which have meaning outside the head of the compound. So, the researcher decided to analyze articles from in education issue of the Jakarta Post edition on April 2021, which were ten articles. This study aimed to investigate (1) what are the types of compound words found in these articles, (2) what are the semantic headedness of compound words found in these articles, (3) what are the percentages of types of compounds and the semantic headedness of compounds found in these articles. Qualitative descriptive method used in this study. From the results of the analysis it can be seen: first, the type of compound words consists of 3 types, namely: (1) nominal compound of 656 words with processes N+N, Adj+N, V+N, and Prep+N, (2) verbal compound of 2 words using V+V, and N+V (3) adjectival compound of 5 words using N+Adj and Adj+Adj processes. Second, there were two types of compound words found, namely 650 words of endocentric compounds and 16 words of exocentric compounds. Third, the percentages of types of compound word found were 98,5% nominal compound, 0,3% verbal compound, and 1,2% adjectival compound. Meanwhile, the percentages of the semantic headedness of compound words found were 97.60% endocentric compounds and 2.40% exocentric compounds. Thus the Jakarta Post used more nominal compound than verbal compounds and adjectival compounds and used more endocentric compound than exocentric compound. This research can also help other researchers understand more about compound words as the formation of word.
