Abstract

Reading is one of skills that should be mastered by students in learning a language including English. Students are always faced by reading English texts at school. In order to get the message conveyed in the texts, reading comprehension is needed. However, many students face difficulties in comprehending the text, especially by the students at the tenth grade of SMK Negeri 1 Kotabumi North Lampung academic year 2015/2016. This condition may be influenced by some factors come from inside of the learners itself such as self-esteem and attitude toward English. For example, they have feeling unworthy and incompetent within themselves, and ignore the importance of English during the learning process. Consequently, it gives influence to their achievement in comprehending reading materials. This research purpose is to investigate whether there is correlation of students’ self-esteem, attitude toward English, and their reading comprehension. This research uses 50 of 395 students which spread in ten classes at the tenth grade as the sample. Sample in this research is taken by using proportional random sampling. The instruments are used in this research consisted of two questionnaires and one written test in the form of multiple choice tests. From the data analysis which obtained by using multiple correlation formula, it is known that the value of robserved = 0.728 while rtable with significance level of 0.05 = 0.279. The result of Fobserved = 26.53 > Ftable = 3.198. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is significant correlation of students’ self-esteem, attitude toward English, and their reading comprehension. This research finding proves that students’ who have positive self-esteem and attitude toward English will get better achievement in reading comprehension than who do not. Students with positive self - esteem and attitude will have more enthusiasts and effort in learning process. Therefore, it will help them to get good achievement.
