Abstract

Reading is one of the four important language skills that should be grasped by the students besides the other skill such as speaking, writing and listening. Through reading, students are capable of knowing everything they want from the text. They can access and comprehend the information from the texts by having good competence in reading. However, in fact most of the students still have problems and difficulties in reading comprehension. One of the problems was caused by the students’ motivation. Based on the problem above, this research is intended to explore the phenomenon about students’ motivation and reading comprehension. The objectives of this research is to investigate whether there is significant correlation between students’ motivation and reading comprehension at the ninth grade students of SMPN 03 Kotabumi Academic Year 2020/2021. The kind of this research is quantitative research and used correlational research design. The research was conducted at the ninth grade students of SMPN 03 Kotabumi with the population of the research consist of 256 students and the sample of the research were 40 students which was established by using proportional random sampling technique. The instrument used in this research to collect the data were tests which divided into two tests, the first test was reading comprehension test with multiple choice form and the second is motivation test with questionnaire form. Then, to prove the hypothesis of the research, the researcher analyzed the data by using the formula of pearson product moment correlation and resulted r observed = 0.392 and r table= 0.312. Then, t observed > t table, with the value of t observed was 2.6298 and t table was 2.027. Based on the result of the data analysis above, it can be concluded that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected, which showed there is significant correlation between students’ motivation and the reading comprehension at the ninth grade students of SMPN 03 Kotabumi in academic year 2020/2021.
