Abstract
It is undeniable that listening plays a crucial role in daily communication and educational process. But it is not an easy task for learners because they have to link it to the background knowledge and linguistic understanding. It made some learners still facing difficulty in listening comprehension process. Therefore, language learners are supposed to employ listening strategy in order to overcome the listening difficulties. The aim of this research was to find out the difficulties encountered by students from four aspects; Message content, Speaker, Listener, and Physical settings. Besides, it aims to reveal students’ listening strategies to overcome difficulties in listening comprehension class. This research employed qualitative research with case study approach that examined six students in third semester from English education study program with three different ability levels; low ability, moderate ability, and high ability level. The design of this research was descriptive research. The instrument used was lecturer’s document and interview guideline. The result of this research showed that students in Low ability level faced difficulty with unfamiliar word (message content), speed of speech (the speaker), and lack in vocabulary (the listener). Then in Moderate ability level students felt difficult in speed of speech (the speaker), and noises (physical settings). While, students in high ability level faced difficulty in long spoken text (message content), variety of accent (the speaker) and noises (physical settings). Besides, the strategies used by six students were social strategy (ask lecturer or exchange with friends), cognitive strategy (write notes), compensation strategy (use situational context and make guesses), metacognitive strategy (keep focus), and affective strategy (keep calm). The low and high ability level students tend to use all strategies while the moderate ability level students only use situational context in compensation strategy and did not find any strategy used in metacognitive to overcome listening difficulty.
