Abstract

Speaking is one of skills in English that is important to be mastered. Having good skill in speaking enables people to express the ideas and convey the messages clearly. In fact most of students still face some problems in speaking English, one of them is low of self-efficacy. Therefore, the researcher conducts a research to find out out the correlation between students’ self-efficacy and their speaking skill at the tenth grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 North Lampung academic year
2017/2018. This research includes into quantitative research of correlational study design. In sampling technique, the researcher used proportional random sampling and got 31 students as a research sample. The instruments used by the researcher were questionnaire and oral test. After the data were collected, the researcher analyzed the data by using Pearson product moment formula with significant level
of 5%. It was found that the score of robserved (0,629) was greater than rtable (0,355). Furthermore, the result of t-test also showed that tobserved (4,361) was greater than ttable (1,699). Besides, the result of determination test showed that the variable X contributes to the variable Y by 40%. It means that self-efficacy affects students’ speaking skill by 40% while the 60% is affected by other factors. From the result of the data analysis above, it can be concluded that there is significant correlation between students’ self-efficacy and their speaking skill at the tenth grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 North Lampung Academic Year 2017/2018.
